ASME IX groove weld type

ASME IX groove weld type

ASME IX groove weld type

(OP)
Can anyone explain me if a bevel edge is imperative for a groove weld type according ASME IX.
Applications : pipes groove weld with 0.5mm to 2.8mm thick

thanks in advance

RE: ASME IX groove weld type

Imperative no. If you goal is to achieve full penetration, depending on welding process you can use a square edge butt joint. Qualify it.

Thanks for you answear "metengr".
Your answear is available even if the material will be under pressure ?

RE: ASME IX groove weld type

The Code does not always get into process details. If you can demonstrate by weld procedure qualification that you can achieve complete penetration for a groove weld using a square butt joint, this meets code.

It was why I'm asking. I'm preparing new WPQ to do ASME welding instead EN.

Thanks "metengr"

RE: ASME IX groove weld type

A square bevel is most commonly used to make the groove weld in the thicknesses described. Note also that joint design is not an essential variable for qualification under ASME IX.

Thanks "stanweld" for your remark.
So, if I use a square bevel for my groove weld WPQ.
Can I make a fillet weld without bevel (square)covered by this WPQ?

RE: ASME IX groove weld type

ASME term for a ISO WPQ is "WPS", Welding Procedure Specification.  Under Sect IX, any groove WPS qualifies for fillet welds.  Just need to include "all fillets" in the WPS.

Does it mean, I have to list all fillet welding type (that I use) in the groove WPS "PQR" to be qualited by this unique WPS ?

RE: ASME IX groove weld type

No. Groove weld qualification permits welding of fillet welds of all sizes.

RE: ASME IX groove weld type

produit67, if you püt a bevel on a fillet weld it is no longer a fillet weld but a groove weld.

RE: ASME IX groove weld type

2.8mm is merely thin wall pipe and need no be beveled,
check t allowed in your procedure
clean the sharp edges is required.

RE: ASME IX groove weld type

The groove design is nonessential variable but shall be specified in the WPS. Section 9 is concerned to qualify that a production weld will withstand the relevant mechanical propreties.

Now, the groove has to be  designed according to the welding process you intend to use.

For that so thin pipe, a square preparation will be OK.
