Staad slab analysis - beam/slab connection

Staad slab analysis - beam/slab connection

Staad slab analysis - beam/slab connection

(OP)
Hello all,

I am fairly new with analysis of structures using Staad and am looking for a little guidance regarding some modeling basics. My supervising engineer doesn't always explain things very well so I'm trying to develop the model with very little guidance.

This is a first floor slab which will be an addition to an existing building. The new slab will fit inside a return in the existing building (see attachment). The existing slab is two way, 9" reinf concrete slab and owner would like to maintain this in the new slab. There will be a new 9"x24" spandrel beam along the new/existing edge, which will frame to existing 18"x18" columns. The other two sides of the slab have 15"x24" spandrels running to new columns. I've attached the Staad input in a word document.

I was getting improper connectivity errors when I modeled the beams along the same neutral axis as the slab. To resolve this I offset the beams and reduced the depth to simulate a monolithic connection. When I used the mesh tool The slab automatically split the beam at every node. Was I right in doing this? Is there a better way to model this simple beam/slab connection?

Again this is one of my first slab analysis using Staad so any help is greatly appreciated.Thank you.
