leaving Catia for NX...will be the future
leaving Catia for NX...will be the future
(OP)
Hi guys, I read in an Italian forum an worrying news. Many automotive companies (German) are leaving CATIA for Siemens NX.
This because the new Catia V6 is too revolutionary compared to V5. Also requires the use of a DS PLM and more companies have Siemens Teamcenter PLM.
What do you think? Is a leap into the unknown?

And you can use Teamcentre with CATIA, so that just seems more FUD. Sounds like someone with an axe to sell.

There will always be chnage in the marketplace and functionality. Training is not an expense, but an investment in both your companies and your own future. The new releases may require some retraining of your exsisting skills.

GM, except Saturn: NX
Saturn & Chrysler: CATIA V4
Ford: PDGS & Ideas
Ideas has been absorbed by NX since then.
Most of the companies that you mention using Pro/E only use it in limited areas like powertrain compoments. Body work is done in their oter CAD package. Toyota uses Pro/E for powertrain, but their own system for body design.
Formula 1 race teams mostly use CATIA with a few using NX.
IndyCar teams use Pro/E, but they use it for suspension work, not aerodynamic design body work. Penske did use Pro/E when they built their own chassis.
Nascar teams use all of the major CAD systems, including Solidworks and Inventor.

At one point no one wanted to use UG because it was owned by GM.
RE: leaving Catia for NX...will be the future
Sponsorship for the race teams does play into their CAD system choices. In most cases that I am aware of, the CAD system came first, then the sponsorship. Ususally it is free software, not money paid.

RE: leaving Catia for NX...will be the future
I know of Lemans constructors that used the software that was given to them free instead of the one their engineers wanted. The teams that get featured in the ads for software are probably paid but the rest like you said just get it free (which is still worth lots of money).
Like any software choice there are many issues besides software the influence the decision. The conclusion for someone choosing a software package is that if a racecar team (or OEM) is using a piece of software that means it can do the job but it doesn't mean it is the best package out there.
