Deep well turbine type pump for sea water pumping

Deep well turbine type pump for sea water pumping

(OP)
We need a pump to supply sea water to our small size 50,000 IGPM capacity desalination plant. We have contacted KSB pump company . They have selected their DWT- B22 B 1 type vertical turbine pump. I am not very clear about their selection, because this pump has open shaft running in a column. It does not have any protection from the sand which will come with the water and going to hit the shaft and its THRODON bearing. I think this pump is OK for clear water but not for sea water. The pump specification and detail is given on www.ksb.com. Can any body help me in this regard.

RE: Deep well turbine type pump for sea water pumping

I'm assuming the Thordon bearing is fluted, in which case, it is the preferred choice for water with sand and grit.

That material is used for bearings on ship impeller shafts for that reason, and because it has some dry running capability, which helps on pump startup.

If you gave the full specifition to KSB I think you should assume they actually know what they are doing, if you didn't give a full specification then I sugest that you do.

Sea water is not similar all around the world, some sites will have more chloride content than others;  sometime service involve using of some acid agent to attack biofouling and increase chlorine content.
In other services, sand is in fluid, but depends of how much solids in ppm is present.
-Ranges to 150 ppm TSS should use standard vertical design
-Ranges to 1000 ppm TSS should use vertical design with enclosed Lineshaft with water flush or oil lubricated. For open, lineshaft construction special bearings and
hardfaced shafting can be provided.

journals. If open lineshaft construction is used the lineshaft and head shaft must also be hardfaced at the
bearing journals with Tungsten Carbide.
