What is 316/316L stand for ?

It is the difference in carbon content that distinguishes the two grades. 316L (low carbon) has carbon max 0.03% and 316 has 0.08%.

I do not know you background. So, sorry if this is too basis: Both are stainless steels. The difference between them has been explained by arunmrao.

Research the website www.nidi.org. there you will ofnd techincal papaers reated to stainless steel.

After you have read that lot you can search the websites of Sandvik, Avesta, RA Amterials and Outokumpu.

It means the material is "Dual Rated" with the corrosion resistant properties of the "L" grade and the mechanical allowable stress properties of the "straight" grade.
