Slurry Transportation Systems.

Slurry Transportation Systems.

(OP)
Dear Friends,

I never was exposed to this subject before, would you be kind enough to introduce me the important factors while designing such a system?

I know there is ASME B31.11 but this is a code and not a design guideline.

ANY HELP IS HIGHLY APPRECIATED.

Sincerely,
Frank

Book Slurry transport Using Centrifugal Pumps
Book Non Newtonian Flow in the Process Industries
FluidFlow3 and AFT Impulse software
Course by GIW on Slurry Pipelining
Technical Papers on GIW pump website
Google slurries and look for Wilson, Addie or Clift powerpoint presentations
HI standard on Slurry pumps
BHRA technical Papaers and conferences
GIW, Warman, Metso etc pump companies
SlurryTech interpretation of Warman pump curves software
Valvetechnologies for metal seated ball valves
Red Valves for sleeved pinch valves
Wey for knife gate valves

A slurry will be a very complex fluid where the following parameters will change the hydraulics:
Temperature
Solids Cw%
Particle size range bands
% fine materials that act as a carrier fluid
Solids/density % for each size band
Non Newtonian fluid characteristics Yield stress, aparent viscosity
Flow regime homogenous or heterogenous, settling or not etc
Density of solids, carrier fluid and slurry
Shape of solids Sharp, rounded , other
pH
Chemical reaction in the pipeline that may change the apprent viscosity.
wear of the pipeline due to velocity, shape factor, hardness, chemistry, pH, alkalinity etc

Like take offs and landings for aircraft, stopping and starting slurry pipelines is challenging.

Vetical pipelines are different to horizontal pipelines as gravity impacts the solids. ie they want to fall down whilst the fluid is going up.

Also the properties of the slurry entering the pipeline and leaving the pipeline may be different to that in the pipeline itself. ie the carrier fluid overtakes the solids, the solids inventory becomes higher in the pipeline.

Come back in a few years when you have got your head around this lot and we can introduce you to the more advanced concepts difficulties of slurry transportation.

stainer,
You phrased my thoughts so eloquently machinegun
