Does wrought 310 stainless also have a tendancy for sigma embrittlement? I am looking at it as an alternative to the HH and HK furnace tubesheets that I have. Otherwise, I'd be looking at RA 330 and Inco 800HT.

RE: 310 wrought resistance to sigma

What property are you concerned about? Sigma is considered beneficial to improving creep strength for some alloys. When installing cat cyclones in the early 70's there was no concern for toughness in 304H, (by C.H.Samans, a sigma researcher referenced in pub.9 of the listed NACE paper.)

RE: 310 wrought resistance to sigma

If you have mechanical or thermal shock issues then it might be an issue, but sigma actually helps high temp strength.
Your HK is 310H.

More Ni will get you better stability.  Look at aging data for HN.  But it will cost much more, that is how it goes.

I currently have HH 45 cast tube supports.  They are already cracked most likely due to  sigma embrittlement. I was looking at whether 310 wrought is susceptible to sigma.  I know that ck 40 (310 cast equivalent is). More concerned about toughness than creep resistance. Does anyone have data to show if RA 330 is comparable in corrosion resistance to HH 45?

RE: 310 wrought resistance to sigma

Yes, Rolled Alloys, RA 330 is actually better in terms of oxidation resistance. We have used this material in our coal burner tips and it has worked very well.

RE: 310 wrought resistance to sigma

I have been making heat resistant steel castings for over 2 decades. I have often had to face the barrel, pointed towards me,the culprit being higher levels of carbon and segregation or chemical inhomogeneity.

Cast products HK,HT,HN series typically have carbon 0.25-0.3% (standard(0.5%max) and HH series 0.15-0.2% (standard 0.25%max),while sheet or other wrought products have carbon around 0.1%.
