Reclaim rubber testing

Reclaim rubber testing

Reclaim rubber testing

(OP)
Our company makes rubber mats. Recently we were approached by a company that claims to make pellets of devulcanized rubber from scrap tire rubber. We were able to get the product to calendar and cure in some of our trial runs but would like to test their claim to understand the constituents and the extent of devulcanization in their product. We tried some rheometer tests but since a large percentage (~ 85%) of virgin rubber was mixed into the test specimen, we are unsure what the role of the recyled material in the cure curve is. What tests would help us understand this product better? I will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Regards,
PP

RE: Reclaim rubber testing

I've always found it best to treat any reclaim as a non-reinforcing filler.  Use up to 15phr in any NR or SBR-based compound will reduce your costs and will not overly affect the physical properties.

Okay, Thank You for your comments Graham!

RE: Reclaim rubber testing

I work extensively with an Israeli devulcanization technology and we have compounds that are up to 70% devulcanized tire rubber.  You can check out our website for physicals and recipes at www.newrubbertech.com.  I would be glad to send samples for your evaluation and help you integrate higher recycled content.  The 70% devulc formulation on our site works exceptionally well for mats.

You may want to take a look to ASTM D 5603-01 is widely used as a QA for ASTM Standard Classification for Rubber Compounding Materials--Recycled Vulcanizate Particulate Rubber

you will test swelling for determine crosslink density of your rubber compound.
