Hemispherical Dome

Hemispherical Dome

Hemispherical Dome

(OP)
Hi,

Does anyone know how to find the latitudinal and longitudinal stresses using Abaqus?
My hemispherical dome is completely symmetric yet S11, S22 and S33 return unsymmetrical results!

Many thanks.

RE: Hemispherical Dome

How is your dome loaded? This could impact your S11, S22 and S33 results.

RE: Hemispherical Dome

(OP)
It is under a gravity load (self weight), made of shell elements.

RE: Hemispherical Dome

Um, are S11 etc. global or local coordinates?  Are they cartesian (most likely) or spherical coordinate frame?  Would you expect the (for example) x-dir. stress to be a constant around a hemisphere?  Certainly the radial, theta, and z-axis stresses ought to be constant with respect to rotation...

RE: Hemispherical Dome

I had this same issue - the problem is that in shell elements, the orientations of S11, S22, and S33 are dependent on the orientation of the shell element.  You cannot transform the results into another coordinate system.

Talk to ABAQUS Support - they'll guide you through the issue.

Thank you TGS4, but I can't use ABAQUS Support as it does not come with the package that I am using. Do you have any pointers?

Btrueblood, it is in cartesian co-ordinates, but I was unsure about whether S11 etc. was representing a local or global frame.
I would expect the x-direction stresses around a hemisphere to be constant as I was hoping to find the latitudinal stresses which are constant around a ring...

RE: Hemispherical Dome

Plot the element coordinate systems.  Then, when you plot S11, etc, it will follow that convention.

(BTW, which package doesn't have Support?)
