CSA Pipeline Schedule?

CSA Pipeline Schedule?

CSA Pipeline Schedule?

(OP)
Hi there,

For piping, usually you do a wall thickness calculation based on CSA z662 or asme b31.3 and you get the minimum wall thickness.  Based on that, you select the pipe schedule that is greater than the mim. WT required.

So for pipeline, using CSA z662, you get a min. WT based on the calculation.

Now my question do they go by schedule?  Or say it turns out to be 3.18mm WT.  Can you just specify and buy a pipeline material that has exactly 3.18mm WT?  OR do they go by schdule like piping that you kinda boost it up to the closest cscheudle?

Thanks!

RE: CSA Pipeline Schedule?

That will depend on how much you want to buy.  Obviously the suppliers can't stock every wall thickness, so the custom is to stock the most common schedules.  If you have a big enough order to make a mill order, rather than buy from local stocks, you can order whatever wall thickness you require.  If your desired quantity is less than a mill order, you'll have to choose from whatever your usual suppliers have in stock.

RE: CSA Pipeline Schedule?

In the old days, if my failing memory serves correctly, CSA Z245.1 had a pretty extensive table of standard wall thicknesses, but I think they dropped it in the last one or two updates.  I think basically the same data exists in Nayyar's Piping Handbook.  If it helps, the data that I have on file in a spreadsheet I built a while back is attached.  Row 2 lists NPS from 1/2" thru 80", and the data in each column under the given NPS shows available pipe wall thicknesses in mm.  The red underline font is for special thin wall pipe.

RE: CSA Pipeline Schedule?

I should add to the above post that you indeed can buy pipe to ANSI / ASME B36.10 dimensions (i.e., "Schedule" numbers) in lieu of the thicknesses listed which normally assume ERW pipe.

RE: CSA Pipeline Schedule?

This may be redundant: NPS/"pipe" (and API casing and tubing) comes in certain diameters and wall thickness. "Tube" is whatever dimensions customer/vendor agree on.
