Aluminum H111 Temper Designation

Aluminum H111 Temper Designation

Aluminum H111 Temper Designation

(OP)
I am trying to understand the H111 temper designation, as compared to say H32 for a 5000 series aluminum.  I have seen the standard description "strain hardened less than the amount for a controlled H11 temper" but no further information than that.  I have also seen that -H111 is often lumped with -O which is fully soft, suggesting that H111 is no different than -O.

Can somebody help clarify this for me?

Thanks,
Jeff

RE: Aluminum H111 Temper Designation

The Aluminum Association defines the following:

H1 strain-hardened only.  Applies to products that are strain-hardened to obtain the desired strength without supplementary thermal treatment.  The number following this designation indicates the degree of strain-hardening.

H_11 Applies to products that incur sufficient strain hardening after the final anneal that they fail to qualify as annealed but not so much or so consistent an amount of strain hardening that they qualify as H_1.
