Welding Procedure standard/guideline please

Welding Procedure standard/guideline please

Welding Procedure standard/guideline please

(OP)
Hi,
I have a question about welding procedures please, and I deeply appreciate your insightful input/answers.
1.    Welding procedure specification (WPS)
2.    Procedure qualification record (PQR)
3.    Welders performance qualification (WPQ)

I know (by definition) what the above three means, I'm fairly new to welding and/or oil and gas industry (just one year experience).
HERE IS MY QUESTION:
When I worked on piping standard for production pad, we used ASME B31.3, 31.4, 31.8 and we simply specified which applies to on and/or off-pad facilities for liquid hydrocarbon, water, and gas. The main thing that appeared in the code were the 3 different equations for B31.4, 31.3, and 31.8. In addition, we just made some recommendations like what pipe sizes should be threaded and which ones should not.

When it comes to welding standard, we have ASME sectoin IX, and API standard 1104. Those I think are the two most widely applied codes to production facilities and piping welding.
SO
When writing a standard/guideline for WPS, PQR, and WPQ, what exactly does this entail?
1. Is it just saying for WPS, use this code, or..
2. I've seen some sample WPS, etc, but for a standard, what kind of information is contained in a company welding procedure standard that the construction folks make contract and/or company welders follow as a procedure, qualification, etc
3. Or do you (after reading through the two codes) say for such kind of weld, use this filler, pre-heat, etc. I've seen a lot of variables (both essential and non-essentials) in sample WPS, but ..
THE BOTTOM LINE IS
If you were asked to write a company standard/guideline on Welding procedures, what would be the content, so that it can be used to get the WPS, PQR, etc
BECAUSE
The code already specifies what kind of fillers should used for what kind of base metals, and treatments, etc. So do you just say, use this code, or if you want to get more specific, what do you include...The codes are 100s of pages, the company standards/guideline based on the codes will of course be 3, 5, or more pages.

THANKS YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

The content would amend and supplement the base standard to incorporate experiential, preferential and company cultural requirements. It would have a clear linkage by clause numbering to the base standard to aid in use and interpretation.

There are many aspects of oil and gas production that the codes do not address and which have to be added in; sour service is one classic example.

RE: Welding Procedure standard/guideline please

In addition to the comments of SJones, the construction Codes, in general, do not specify the type of filler metal or welding process to be used to join materials. This is up to you to include in your Company Standard. Your Company Standard should establish restrictions of welding processes, welding procedure & welder qualifications; define filler metals to be used, especially for dissimilar metals welding; define additional testing requirements both for welding procedure qualification and production welds based on service requirements, etc.

Thanks,
So does it mean the wps describes for specific pipe sizes and types of joints, and variables, and all that. While the welders qualification specifies the steps to weld a test coupon in order to certify a welders skill, What is a procedure qualification record???

Again, this means that there will be a separate WPS for different ranges of pipes and base materials and/or types of joints

thanks

RE: Welding Procedure standard/guideline please

mysarah, you really need the services of a Welding Engineer, sorry.  The questions you are asking are too basic to give simple explanations to.  It is like asking about quadratic equations before you have been taught Algebra.

RE: Welding Procedure standard/guideline please

For stainless steels a good reference are the papers on www.nidi.org. Also you will find that the majors have welding guidelines. refer Avesta, Sandvik, Ra Amterials and Bohler.

Otherwise here is a good start for your education. http://www.wtia.com.au/

You might also like to investigate the standards on the Norske website.

If you troll the net you will find standard specifications put out by the major oil companies.

I can see that you are starting at the beginers level and want to learn. You will need to put in the hard yards rather than getting a quick fix in this forum.

I suggest that when you are at a point where you have produced a document then get an experienced engineer to peer review it for you. Try your local engineering institution. They could well have a group interested in welding. Go to meetings. Join the committee if you can. Volunteer to help a standards committee involved in welding. Even if it only proof reading. Get involved and learn.
