RE: What is the definition of RETAINERS according ASME IX

Retainers as used in Section IX are designed to hold metal metal are not part of the weld nor fuse with the weld deposit.

Backing is where welding is performed against either existing weld metal or a fusible material.

Adding to the post by metengr here are links to Robvon, backing rings, and Cerbaco, ceramic retains.
A learning curve is needed using either one.  Neither can be used as crutch during a weld job, they are used to make a sound weld.
