Speed Advise
(OP)
Hi,
I am after some advise as to whether I can get any more from SolidEdge.
We used to run some old crabby dual core 2.66GHz PCs with 3GB RAM and 256MB grahics cards but have recently upgraded our computers to the following spec:
Dell Precision T1500
Intel i5 Quad Core Processor 2.66GHz
6GB RAM
XP 64-bit
Nvidia Quadro FX580 GPU 512MB
The trouble is we haven't seen any performance improvement with large assemblies; well for that matter the whole program is just as slow starting even with the enhanced hardware. We are still using Solid Edge v18 SP12 (groan!!) and I suspect it is that this is single threaded legacy software and we have out of it all we are going to get, but when you see some of the demos they fly along even on large assemblies (which is where we do a lot of our work).
Has enyone got any ideas on what I can do? Are there any performance improvements anyone has? Has anyone else had problems like this?
Any experiences appreciated.
Thanks

RE: Speed Advise
You've already gone to 64 bit which helps as you can use more RAM. However, I'm not sure how V18 works with 64 bit.
We went to 64 bit at V19 16 GB RAM, & a faster network connection and it made a big difference on large assy's.
V19 is still stuck to single core for must functions, not sure about the latest versions.

RE: Speed Advise
This might sound silly but are you using a 64-bit version of Solid Edge, because I'm not sure that v18 had a 64-bit version. We have just moved from V20 to ST2 and there does appear to be a performance improvement.
As for your 'crabby' old pc, this is more or less the spec I am using now, with 32-bit SE and an FX1800 512MB graphics card.
Some things are a bit slow at times, but I am working in our top-level assembly that has over 100K parts without much difficulty.
The thing to remember is to hide anything that is not required. If we diplay everything then its slow, but hiding all the stuff that we don't need makes things much quicker.
We have also set fasteners etc to not display at the next level - so the GA has very few in it.
This reduces the 'face count' considerably.
We also use simplified parts - there is slight a trade-off here because simplified part file sizes are slightly bigger, so make sure you do the simplification in no more that 2 or 3 steps if possible.
You could also go to Tools > Options > View and turn off 'Use Shading on Selection' , 'Process Hidden Edges During View Operations, and 'Dim Surrounding Assembly when in-place activated'

Where would we be without sat-nav?
RE: Speed Advise
How do you go about setting fastners/hardware not to display at the next level?
I assume they show in sub-assemblies, but not in the top level.
Where is the selection for this made?
Thanks,

RE: Speed Advise
How big are your assemblies?
How complex are your parts?
What is your network speed?
Is the AV software slowing you down? This should be set so that Solid Edge files are ignored.
Do you have lots of inter-part links?
You should really sort all these things out before restricting what you can see at the higher level assemblies, and preferably upgrade to latest version of SE.
