What would be a good reference oil to test dynamic characteristics?

RE: Reference Oil With Well Tested Characteristics

SAE30?  West Texas Intermediate?  Arabic Light?  Olive?

It would help to know the ultimate purpose of the oil, or your experiments, to make any realistic suggestion.

The application is a gear pump.

RE: Reference Oil With Well Tested Characteristics

Back to square one.  What kind of oil is your gear pump designed for?  Food grade oil?  Crude?  Refined lubricating oil?

Without any other information, we can just give you wild ideas.  How about USP grade mineral oil?  The wife's mother likes Oil of Olay...

RE: Reference Oil With Well Tested Characteristics

And you are testing the 'dynamic characteristics' of ... what?

The oil?

The pump?

The motor?

What exactly do _you_ mean by 'dynamic characteristics'?

I am planning a test focused on a gear pump for light aircraft engines using a variety of lube oils and simply seek guidance on a robust reference or baseline oil with well-documented characteristics.

RE: Reference Oil With Well Tested Characteristics

Much better.

SAE 30W, as BigInch suggested.  Most heavily documented oil wrt properties and applications.

Better would be to look at a variety of engines, and choose the type, grade, etc. that is common to most.  Nowadays, that is likely to be a synthetic or blend.

Thanks to all for your help!
