High temperature transparent polymer

High temperature transparent polymer

High temperature transparent polymer

(OP)
Hi. I need a rigid material that can be used as a transparent window (2-3mm thick) in an induction heating application. Both the induction coil and the pyrometer (spectral wavelength = 2um) will be located at the opposite side to the material being heated. The temperature will reach approx 420C for short intervals (5-10seconds) and then allowed to cool naturally.

Any suggestions on a polymer material that might be suitable?

Many thanks.

The window needs to be manufactured to a given curvature and this poses problems if we use glass. Also the glass is obviously very brittle and not suited to our production environment. Polycarbonate would be ideal due to its flexibility etc but the high temperatures are a problem. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

RE: High temperature transparent polymer

Curved Pyrex glass should be no problem.  I don't know of any polymer that can take your temperature without some type of reflective surface coating.
If you need an alternate material look at the products offered by Axim.

RE: High temperature transparent polymer

Glass or Mica are my recommendations. Almost all thermoplastics can be moulded at those temperatures.

I am not sure of the short term thermal stability of transparent thermosets like Ally polymers (CR39)

You might want to checkout Quartz Tubing as well as the Pyrex tubing at the National Scientific site. There is also a lot of physical data here.

RE: High temperature transparent polymer

PBI is not transparent and has a dark color.
