Subsea Pipes design and loads

Subsea Pipes design and loads

Subsea Pipes design and loads

(OP)
Hello everybody!

Next week I have an interview for an Oil&Gas company for a Subsea Engineer role

The role must be able to design piping and support structures and framework layout.

Now, I'm trying to imagine the design loads and the main problems.

Loads:
1) fluid pressure
2) Fluid and pipes weight
3) Shock loads due to Earthquakes
4) Shock loads due to transportation
5) Loads due to waves
6) Thermal loads due to temperature difference between fluid and sea
7) Instability: compressive loads due to temperature expansion; section instability due to pressure and thermal loads

My questions are:
a) Are there other loads to consider?
b) Are the pipes lead on the subsea or suspended?
c) Which kind of steels are used? Inox steels?
d) Which are the typical problems when the layout must my designed?
e)Which are the pressures for pump the fluid into the pipes?
f) Does anyone have some tips for my interview?

Many thanks in advance!
Regards

RE: Subsea Pipes design and loads

Excuse me from stating the obvious but you say for the job role the applicant must be able to design Subsea piping and supporting systems if I am correct!! Yet you are asking questions which the applicant should know to fulfill the role. Don't you think this position is outside of your competence/knowledge ?

Anyway to answer your questions:-
a) yes there are other loads
b) pipes are laid on the seabed or sometimes even laid in trenches.
c)It depends - many different materials may be used.
d)Not sure what you are asking but all layouts must be designed.
e)Depends on the fluid/pressure drop etc
f)Don't blag it - be honest and say you want to learn!!!

RE: Subsea Pipes design and loads

Look at the Norsok standards that are available
