Guarding on arbor presses

Guarding on arbor presses

Guarding on arbor presses

(OP)
Is there any specific ansi standard for guarding of a mechanical arbor press?  I have one with a pilot wheel that can spin freely with the press cycling with every spin.  I see that as a signitificant point of operation issue that should be guarded but no arbor press I know of has any type of safeguarding provided.  Any thoughts? Thanks

RE: Guarding on arbor presses

Wendy, I don't think you'll find any standards for equipment guarding in ANSI, your best bet is in the OSHA Standards. In some equipment operations, guards are sometimes more of hindrance and safety hazard. In some cases, the operation cannot take place if guards are in place. This requires a conditional exemption from the standards by the governing agency. At the vary minimum, labeling pinch points and moving parts may be the only alternative.

create a safty working zone around the machine and fit a guard rail if posssible. Remember 'Accidents are  Caused, and could have been prevented'..

Wendy, check out the ANSI B11 standards. They may apply to your specific application.
