Weld hardness traverse

Weld hardness traverse

Weld hardness traverse

(OP)
Hi All,

I'm trying to find the appropriate ASTM standard for a weld hardness traverse (destructive, on the cross-section), preferably Vickers testing. It is to replace a reference in a spec I'm writing to the Australian standard AS 2205.6.1. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Does E384 contain any specifications on hardness traverses? I think ISO 9015-1 might be similar to what I'm looking for, but I would prefer an ASTM standard.

I can purchase the documents, I just don't want to do that if they are not going to give me what I need.

Thanks in advance,
Gem1

RE: Weld hardness traverse

I have not seen a specific ASTM specification pertaining to traverse hardness testing of welds.

Why not try AWS Standards?

Can you recommend the appropriate AWS Standard metengr? I have D1.1, D1.6 and ARE-6 but none of them appear to contain any useful guidance on hardness traverses. ARE-6 mentions HV traverses but it isn't detailed enough to substitute for the AS standard.

RE: Weld hardness traverse

I have never seen anything like that in ASTM.
In the '70s there were problems with oil storage tank weld seams. CB&I developed a procedure using 30 HVN to traverse weld seams. It was used but I don't recall API developing a standard. I believe R. Bruscato will be the author if you search literature.

EN 1043-1 which is referenced by ISO 15614-1.  You can make that BS EN 1043-1 if you don't like EN standards!

API 582, 12.6 provides appropriate info regarding your question.

RE: Weld hardness traverse

ISO 9015-1 covers high load hardness testing (macrohardness using HV 5 and above) while 9015-2 covers the microhardness range (HV 0,1 to less than HV 5).  ISO 14271 is specific to resistance welds (spot, projection, and seam) and ISO 22826 applies to narrow welds by laser or electron beam processes.  EN 1043-1 is essentially identical to ISO 9015-1 and EN 1043-2 with ISO 9015-2.  FWIW, I doubt that the EN standards will still be around in 5 years, as that organization has done an extensive rationalization with ISO, and areas like this where the content is identical have already been commonized.

Thanks everyone, you've been a great help!

RE: Weld hardness traverse

NACE RP0472 is another spec we often see referenced for hardness testing requirements, in particular for procedure qualification.

RE: Weld hardness traverse

NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 contains maps for through-weld hardness testing.
