A529 GR 50 cracking after galv

A529 GR 50 cracking after galv

(OP)
Angles welded to tubes then galvanized. The angle its self cracked/tore near the weld. We replaced the angles and the same thing happened. The 3rd time we replaced them with A572 GR50 and they didnt crack. What would cause this? Does the welding then galv process not work well with the A529?

RE: A529 GR 50 cracking after galv

There needs to be a seal weld all around the angle if it's going to be galvanized.  If not, the galvanizing material can get between the materials and expand.  Could this have caused your welds to crack?

The angle is seal welded and on the other end it is a fillet weld tieing the end to another tube.
