Diaphragm to Shearwall Connection

Diaphragm to Shearwall Connection

(OP)
Hi all,

We have an OWSJ roof system and a detail that shows the chord angle lag screwed to the 2x4 blocking between the OWSJ, and the 2x4 blocking is connected to the two top plates of the stud wall using Simpson Strong Tie's A21 Tie. The contractor on site did none of this and went ahead and installed the metal deck. I am looking for a fix without having to destroy the deck.

I am thinking of connecting the wood sheathing to the chord angle and then adding nails from the sheathing to the two top plates. My question is: How can I fasten my sheathing to the chord angle? Simpson Strong Tie's products are not readily available where this building is.

Thanks,

Clansman

A sketch would help here...

One thing that concerns me here though is the mention of attaching anything to the flange of the OWSJ.  I am sure that ahy welded or bolted connection would lower the capacity of the truss if not void any warranty.  Better check with the truss supplier if you want to do that.

This is the detail that shows how it should have been done, see attached. The metal deck was installed without the contractor having to lag screw the angle to the blocking or installing the A21 SST tie. I am proposing that we somehow connect the sheathing to the chord angle and then add nails from the sheathing to the two top plates for the shear. My question is, how can I connect the angle to the wood sheathing? Any concerns with this idea?

I would have to use self-tapping screws. Is there a brand I can spec that is commonly available? Where can I find shear strength values for it?

RE: Diaphragm to Shearwall Connection

Shear strength of self tapping screws would likely depend on the thickness of your sheathing.

It may be simpler to shoot Hilti or Ramset nails through the sheathing into the angle.

If the 2x4 blocking is firmly wedged between joists, you could nail the sheathing to them and also the top plates.  That would transfer shear from the roof deck to the wall.
