Allowable Bearing Stress for Wellhead
Allowable Bearing Stress for Wellhead
(OP)
Hello!
I'm working on calculation of Load Shoulder Capacity of the wellhead, and for this I need to know the Allowable Bearing Stress.
If the material is AISI4130 75K Yield Stress and 95k Tensile Stress, what is the Allowable Bearing Stress for it?
I look at one reference, found : Allowable Bearing Stress = 1.4 x Tensile Stress
But what is the reference for that?
Anyone can help?
Thank you :)

RE: Allowable Bearing Stress for Wellhead
ASME Section VIII, Division 2, Section 4 contains design methodology for pressure-containing equipment and is incorporated by reference in API 6A. Of course, it goes on to say "Fatigue analysis and localized bearing stress values are beyond the scope of this International Standard."

I'm referring to 20" landing sub, 16" casing hanger & packoff.
I've been looking at the ASME Sect VIII Div 2 Sect 4 and it doesn't tell clear information to me, I'll look again, and I don't think API 6A says anything about it.

Thanks for the table, but I might be right dafty here as I'm guessing the nomenclature. Ftu & Fty are clear, ultimate and yield. How about Fcy, Fsu? Guess Fbru & Fbry are ultimate bearing and yield bearing? Sorry about this.
Thanks a lot, guys!
RE: Allowable Bearing Stress for Wellhead
Fcy = compressive yield strength
Fsu = shear ultimate strength
Fbru = bearing ultimate strength
Fbry = bearing yield strength
You can freely download the entirety of MIL-HDBK-5J or its replacement, DOT/FAA/AR-MMPDS-01, from which this information was extracted.
