ASME Section V Article 9 Subsection T-923

ASME Section V Article 9 Subsection T-923

ASME Section V Article 9 Subsection T-923

(OP)
T-923 Physical Requirements
Personnel shall have an annual vision test to assure natural or corrected near distance acuity such that they are capable of reading standard J-1 letters on standard Jaeger test type charts for near vision.

Then it says: Equivalent near vision tests are acceptable.

QUESTION - What exactly complies with Equivalent??

I read the ASNT referenced in the previous post and it seems to agree that the requirements are really not standardized.

I guess the most direct question would be, what will ASME Section v accept as the equivalent?
(1)Would J2 meet their equivalent criteria.
(2) Will ASME accept the AWS CWI requirements for an eyetest? ( Snellen at 12" and a color perception examination by an Eye Examiner Professional )

I believe that J2 would not be considered equivalent as it is a larger type size from the J1.  By using this logic, someone could claim that a J5 is equivalent to a J1 because a J1≡J2 and J2≡J3 and J3≡J4 and J4≡J5; therefore J5≡J1 – which just isn't logical.

However, based on the information in the article that jbeckhou referenced, a Snellen or LogMAR test might be considered equivalent as they are different tests aimed at achieving the same result:  a measurement of vision acuity.

RE: ASME Section V Article 9 Subsection T-923

Whereas the Jaeger Charts are readily available from the ASNT, why the concern? CWI's can perform visual examinations per ASME B31.1 and B31.3 and other Codes, which mandate Article 9, provided they receive and pass the annual eye exam. The three year eye examinations required for CWI certification do not apply to the requirements of T-923.
