Where can I get the API standards for equipment identification?

(OP)
I would like to know how the euipments are named as per API standards like MBD, ABJ etc.
Also the standard symbols. As I was browing through different P&IDs I found lot of discrepancies.

RE: Where can I get the API standards for equipment identification?

See API 14C.

Ding, ding, Mike Clay the big winner - surprise!!!  I would have argued - but checking API RP 14C table 2-2 you can find each of these examples, MBD; M for Pressure Vessel and BD for Separator; A for atmospheric veessl and BJ for tank.

To buy a copy of API RP 14C contact the American Petroleum Institute.

I cannot help you much with your people question.  The English word vessel begins with V.  Compressor begins with C, the first letter for compressor in the API RP 14C table.  API RP 14C applies to offshore safety systems.  ISA provides a standard for instrumentation tag numbers.  No comparable standard is regarded as the equipment numbering standard.
