Model Airplane Wing Design Project

Model Airplane Wing Design Project

Model Airplane Wing Design Project

(OP)
My son is working on a college project to design a  model airplane.  The plane has a weight limit and must be able to carry a certain amount of weight.  He is looking for some simple guidance for designing some of the parts of the airplane.  He specifically needs design information on a wing, but other parts of the airplane would be useful too.  He must show some calculations justifying the prediction of the weight it can carry.  Does anyone know some resources he can use, on the Interenet or in a text book, where some of the complex aeronautical design steps are explained in simple form?

Thanks for your help.

Rich

RE: Model Airplane Wing Design Project

There are indeed a lot of resources on the web.  Unfortunately, this is not one of them; student postings and homework problems are not allowed here.

While it's good that you're interested in helping your son, are you really helping him if he can't even find the basics of the information on the web by himself, particularly if he's a college student?

Thank you for this information.  I was not aware of the policy.  Makes sense though.

I am not looking to do his work.  I am looking for additional resources I can steer him towards so he can do his own research.  Thank you for the website on model planes.  What I was hoping to find is resources on the actual aeronautical design forces needed to design the parts.

Thanks again.

rlewistx,
He is in college, have him talk to a professor.  If that fails, seriously just Google it, there are millions of sites on model aircraft, including some free resources for calculating airfoil Cl and Cd properties (hint: NASA has a page).  Did he even try to find any information on his own or what because the web is abundant with R/C guys.

RE: Model Airplane Wing Design Project

A good basic textbook is Introduction to Flight by John Anderson.  Fundamentals of Flight by the same author is a more complete and technical textbook.  Dover publishes theory of wing sections and several other older yet still fundamental textbooks which while old, are inexpensive and if he doesn't mind a bit of a slog will get him where he needs to go.
