BS 6399 states a certain amount of horizontal imposed loading on barriers/railings of so much per m. What if you have a sigle or double legged post in the centre of a "run". Is there a load requirement for that?

RE: posts

Since the post supports the railing, I believe that the post load is specified with the railing load.

Ah, but there's no railing on this post. It's at the side of steps just to allow a grabhold of sorts.

RE: posts

6399 also gives a load as a single point load, usually applied in the location to give you the worst case.  If I remember the load is up to 1.5kN depending on application.

As the engineer you need to determine if a higher load may be more suitable.

As a side note.  Why would you have steps with a single post to act as a hand hold?  Why would you not just provide a handrail?

Thanks for that, I'll check it out.
There are seats/isles in line with the steps, and the steps are not wide enough for a central rail, a side rail would block access to the isles.
