BS 6399 states a certain amount of horizontal imposed loading on barriers/railings of so much per m. What if you have a sigle or double legged post in the centre of a "run". Is there a load requirement for that?
When was the last time you drove down the highway without seeing a commercial truck hauling goods?

As the engineer you need to determine if a higher load may be more suitable.
As a side note. Why would you have steps with a single post to act as a hand hold? Why would you not just provide a handrail?
RE: posts
There are seats/isles in line with the steps, and the steps are not wide enough for a central rail, a side rail would block access to the isles.
