Welding API 5L and ASTM A36

Welding API 5L and ASTM A36

Welding API 5L and ASTM A36

(OP)
We're making a structural member and the client has some API 5L pipe laying around that he wants to use. We have to weld an A36 plate to the end. Are these two materials compatible for welding?

If so, any advice on a weld spec/procedure to use?

RE: Welding API 5L and ASTM A36

API 5L pipe, what Grade (A, B, A25, X42, X46...)? For the X grades , they can be welded to A36. Make sure you qualify a weld procedure using AWS D1.1 guidelines because the higher strength grades will require some welding requirements for interpass temperatures to avoid softening.

One size is API 5L/BM-PSL2 and the other is API 5L/X52M-PSL2.

RE: Welding API 5L and ASTM A36

The 'old reliable' process for top-quality welds on carbon steels is SMAW 'Stick' welding, using a premium grade of E-7018 rod.  My favorite, and that of most ASME code-stamp outfits, is ESAB's 'Atom-Arc'.  Both of your API pipes will weld to A36 and A992.

RE: Welding API 5L and ASTM A36

If you are welding a structural member in accordance with AWS D1.1, API 5L X52 is a prequalified base metal and can be welded to A36 without the need to qualify the procedure by testing provided you include the requirements of Clause 3 when you write your prequalified WPS.
