We need to shrink fit a 210.5 mm diameter shaft into a hollow cylinder (OD 535 mm, ID 210 mm, Length 560 mm), both made of 1020 steel. Some people here are suggesting heating the cylinder and simultaneously cooling the shaft. While I can understand & calculate shrinking of the shaft if cooled, I can't quite visualize how the cylinder will behave when heated. I'm thinking may be the bore diameter will instead decrease when the body of the cylinder expands?  

I guess I have to calcualte stresses but the first problem for me is whether the bore will shrink or expand & by how much.

I have very little experience in shrink fitting. Can anyone please help?

The inner radius of the cylinder will expand in the outward radial direction by alpha*R*T.

Look through the forums and I think you'll find this topic has been asked before.

This is a very basic concept that trips-up many beginner engineers. The hole will expand as if it were made of steel. Make sure you fully understand why, because the concept is applied in all problems involving thermal expansion, which are very common.
