Propagate Cut to Parts

Propagate Cut to Parts

Propagate Cut to Parts

(OP)
Hello all,

While at the assy level of a weldment I performed a few drilled holes and cut-extrudes and made sure to checkmark the box "Propagate to Parts" option.  The features do propagate to the part level but the features continue to remain in the assembly level tree.  Does anyone know why this is?  I thnk if you propagate the feature to the part level the feature should dissappear from the assy level tree.

SolidWorks is working the way it is designed to...  Just not the way you expected.

Sorry,

Hi Anna,
If the features are going to show up in two different trees (part and assy) which is the proper one to edit if needed?

Thanks

RE: Propagate Cut to Parts

I have no idea.  I never put in holes or features in at the assembly level unless it is truly a feature that is supposed to be processed at the assembly level.  Which would mean the feature is not propagated down to the part level.

RE: Propagate Cut to Parts

The only feature that can be edited is the one placed in the assy. The features shown in the parts are only "placeholders" (I don't know the correct term) for the feature ... they cannot be edited, only suppressed.

RE: Propagate Cut to Parts

I believe the correct term is "update holders".

RE: Propagate Cut to Parts

Close ... but Update Holders are only in assys referencing the in-context parts.

I don't believe there is an official term for the quasi-features created in-context and shown at the part level.

RE: Propagate Cut to Parts

BB,

I sometimes use the propagate to parts in top-down design.  However, this is a convenience tool in my opinion.  After propagating the features to the part level I then go into the affected parts and break the relationship to the assembly so these features become native to their parts.  This is the same as editing a part in the context of an assembly and then breaking those in-context relationships.

For other assembly features, such as mate-drilled holes, I do not propagate them since they will not be created in the parts prior to assembly.  Hope this helps.

Thanks to all for the input.
