Code Accepted Chairs for Foundations on Grade

(OP)
Hi, Please help! I know contractors are not supposed to use rebar resting on the ground to support rebar - for all the obvious reasons... but, I've tried to find what code or where this is specifically stated and I can't find it. Some posts on these forums say it's CRSI, another post specifically said CRSI does not specify chairs. Unfortunately, I do not have the CRSI Manual... so, I'm at a loss.

If anyone knows where it is and what it says and you could post it, that would be awesome.

Thanks.

RE: Code Accepted Chairs for Foundations on Grade

CRSI does specify bar supports.  The need for supports is ACI 318 7.5.1, and of course, the cover requirements throughout the Code implicitly mandate support accessories. (How else do you secure reinforcement within tolerance prior to concrete placement?)

Chapter 3 of the CRSI Manual of Standard Practice is devoted to bar supports.  I can't do justice to 17 pages of information here.  Bent rebar standees are commonly used to support reinforcement in deep mats and footing.  They should be avoided against formwork, earth-formed sides, or other exposed surfaces.  As with any bar support, select the material based on corrosion-resistance, appearance, durability, and tolerance requirements.

Get the manual.
