Hooke's gravity train equations

Hooke's gravity train equations

Hooke's gravity train equations

Does anyone know where to find Robert Hooke's mathematical equations that led to the Gravity Train theory?

http://www.damninteresting.com/the-gravity-express

Obviously this is not work related, I'd just like to see the math.

RE: Hooke's gravity train equations

A quote from the second article:
Not to mention that drilling a 6 meter wide hole through the Earth would displace over 340 cubic meters of rock

Quite a bit more, I'd say.

RE: Hooke's gravity train equations

1.13 billion cubic meters only a little more than 340

RE: Hooke's gravity train equations

CastMetal,

Really not. Being the earth diameter at the equator 12756.3 km,the volume would be: 360675885,3 cubic metre

RE: Hooke's gravity train equations

I thought I remembered the number correctly as 40000km but turns out that was circumference.

my apologies

RE: Hooke's gravity train equations

While taking college physics back in the early '60's, such math was covered. Halliday and Resnick was our physics book.

Thanks ione!  Exactly what I was looking for.

RE: Hooke's gravity train equations

I'd never heard of Hooke's "Gravity Train", but the same topic is covered in this blog post:

http://newtonexcelbach.wordpress.com/2010/06/14/elegant-solutions-simple-harmonic-motion-and-the-hole-through-the-middle-of-the-earth/

and following posts look at it in a bit more detail.

There's also a link between the transit time equation and Euler's column buckling formula, if you have a look around.
