Reusing a group of parts in another assembly?

Reusing a group of parts in another assembly?

Reusing a group of parts in another assembly?

(OP)
Hi! The question may seem a bit odd, but I would like to take a group of parts from an assembly, they are all mated together but it's not a sub assembly, and bring them in a different assembly. It's kind of like if I want to make a copy with mates but between two different assemblies.

Is it possible?

Thanks in advance.

Patrick

RE: Reusing a group of parts in another assembly?

Suggest making them into a subassy and using it that way in both places.

Alternatively you could copy the existing assy to a new name (Save As with Copy option) and then delete the stuff you don't need.

Still another alternative is to make a config of this assy and suppress the appropriate parts to reveal your smaller collection of parts.  These last two options retain the existing mates.  Done properly, so does the first option.

RE: Reusing a group of parts in another assembly?

If you don't want to make a new sub-assembly for the group of parts, you can insert the current assembly as-is, then dissolve it and delete the parts you don't want.  That would keep the mates intact.

RE: Reusing a group of parts in another assembly?

Any reason you can't (or don't want to) create a sub-assy?

If so, another method is to use the Form new sub-assy here function to create the external sub-assy, but then exit the upper assy without saving. The new sub will not then be referenced.

After inserting the new sub into the other assy, the sub can be dissolved leaving the "group" mates intact, but the group itself will need to be mated to the new upper assy.

To be fair that's a workflow I would use with Solid Edge and the System library command and I was hoping there was a similar tool in SW.

I'll look into your suggestions and I'll find a suitable way.

Thanks

Patrick
