Grading Rules for Douglas Fir

Grading Rules for Douglas Fir

(OP)
Does anyone know what the grading rules are for No. 1 Douglas fir?

Thanks but I am looking for the allowable amount of checks. We have a problem with some 6x12's that are in place with no grade stamps and checks full length.

RE: Grading Rules for Douglas Fir

The WWPA (www2.wwpa.org) sells the Western Grading Rules which gives the allowable checks, holes, etc. for the western lumber grades. The last one I got costed $6.

"West Coast Lumber Standard Grading Rules".  Mine was only $2 in 1984!

Ordered the $6 manual. They didn't give any indication when it will get here. Odd web site couldn't get a pdf or quicker shipping so we wait. We have exposed timbers that have checks full length. My guess is they don't qualify but want to know for sure before we start the fight.

RE: Grading Rules for Douglas Fir

From the on-line free download (that wannabeEIT gives) it is the depth of the check, split, shake that limits them. I have typically used a business card to check the depth of them in the field. I add a 1/2" to the card depth get the depth of them.
