Surge Protection on Substation Battery Systems
Surge Protection on Substation Battery Systems
(OP)
Does anyone have guidance on surge protection for DC battery systems in substation applications?
Would ungrounded/floating batteries be any more susceptible than grounded batteries?
I have found a few references to sales of surge suppressors for battery systems, but not an applications guide for determining if they are needed. RUS Bulletin
1724E-300 Design Guide for Rural Substations lists MOVs as something to include on DC schematics, but does not indicated how to apply them.

RE: Surge Protection on Substation Battery Systems
SEL makes some nice devices that are relatively inexpensive and work very well.
