UPS room A/C

UPS room A/C

(OP)
how suitable is a split A/C system for an UPS room (±15kW)?
how do you control the split A/Cs in a duty standby rotation?

RE: UPS room A/C

15kW cooling load or UPS?  Either way, a small system.

I assume you mean a ductless split or a ceiling cassette, and in most instances for small systems of low to medium criticality, this would be fine.

External controllers can be bought to manage the duty cycling, redundant start on primary fail and restart after power-down.  Try Liebert AC-4 or similar, although i've never used one on not a liebert system and they are now becoming obsolete as unit controllers learn to play nice.  Most third party controllers can be configured for this anyway.

Beware of low supply temps and possible condensation.  This will not have humidity control, but this can be managed in areas without extreme drys and prolonged humids.

You will most likely need ventilation, so add this to your load.

RE: UPS room A/C

I believe that a standard split AC unit would be fine for a UPS, and I wouldn't go for a precision unit (like Liebert)that is much more expensive.
You would have to check that the unit can handle cooling operation in winter.

RE: UPS room A/C

Make sure your A/C is on the backup generator. It is embarrassing to drop the critical load when a fully operational UPS goes into thermal shutdown because the room overheats.

Obvious? Maybe. Certainly makes you wonder why it happens time and time again. smile
