Norsok terminology interpretation assistance please...

Norsok terminology interpretation assistance please...

(OP)
Hello chaps,

Norsok M-710 standard, relating to non-metallic seals, applies to subsea systems and topside critical gas systems.

I have looked everywhere I can think of, and am now stuck; what do Norsok define as a "critical gas system"? Is it only those used for isolation for example?

Thanks

Jon

RE: Norsok terminology interpretation assistance please...

I don't know if I've seen it actually defined in Norsok standards, so I'd have to revert to my standard definition and say "Critical" is an often used and very subjective term dependent on the specific item being designed.  It can be interpreted to mean a range of conditions from creating an actual danger to life or property, to simply that which would make impossible the safe continuance of the process being considered.  A critical gas system could be any such system where the loss of pressure, flow or availability, or other change in that system's conditions which would result in a loss of control of the process, or otherwise cause or contribute to the imminent creation of hazardous conditions to such an extent that safe recovery, or the performance of any safe actions necessary to return to controlled conditions, while all the time remaining below acceptable risk levels, would no longer be possible.

Only by pure chance, since those documents aren't remotely associated with anything I'm doing now.  I ran across them about 8 yrs ago, trying to answer someone's question about helicopter landing pad lighting.

Unfortunately, it goes to enabling my packrat-ish tendencies...

Although it classifies according to criticality level, I think you would be hard pressed to find a definition of "critical" there.  It appears that everything is either low, medium, or high.  Where is there a binary definition of "critical", or "not critical"?  Did I miss it?

No, there wasn't, but presumably, one can at least determine whether it's low, medium, or high, and make at least a rational decision.
