Gentlemen - can you help explain ASME Section VIII, Div. 2 Section 5.3.2 required of σ 1 + σ2 + σ3  ≤ 4S.

I have a Square nozzle with rounded corners on a vessel that has been evaluated using finite element methods(NASTRAN).  Maximum stresses occur in a few elements at the radius corners in the shell.

All Pm,Pl + Pb, and Pl+Pb+Q  limits have been satisfied.

When performing the σ 1 + σ2 + σ3  ≤ 4S check do I use only the primary stresses (Pl and Pb) to calculate each of the 3 direction principle stresses or do I used the primary + secondary stresses (pl + Pb + Q) for this check.?.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide"

Paul

Paragraph 5.3.2 is very clear that you are to use the "local primary membrane plus bending principal stresses".  That means Pl+Pb.
