Diesel Generator Building

Diesel Generator Building

Diesel Generator Building

(OP)
I have two situations -
1.A diesel generator building approx 400 ft2 separate from the main building - Does the Gen Building require sprinkler protection?
2. A diesel generator building seperate from the main building with an electric fire pump in the main building backed up by the generator - Does the Gen Bldg require sprinkler protection?

RE: Diesel Generator Building

Are this two different buildings/rooms? If so the room/building that contains the fire pump most likely is to be sprinklered. What is the distance from the other room to the main building? The scenario presented seems a bit confusing. Is it two room or just one?

RE: Diesel Generator Building

(OP)
These are two different situations but both are small buildings that contain the diesel generators. The small gen buildings are roughly 100 ft from the main building. Yes, the main building is fully sprinklered including the room that contains the electric fire pump.

RE: Diesel Generator Building

Well the problem here is that those two rooms contain flammable liquids however they both are about 100 Ft away from the main building which is fully sprinklered. I know as a fact that anything adjacent to the building has to be sprinklered such as storage rooms, awnings, etc. In this case I will have to look in the NFPA 13 to clarify however your local  fire/building code may not require to install them. Let me check on this

RE: Diesel Generator Building

While telling us the applicable codes, can you tell us the amount of diesel fuel in each building and their uses or occupancies?

To your basic questions, I would say no to questions 1 and 2. In question number 2, it appears as if the electric fire pump in the protected building is connnected to a standby or emergency power system. If the building is not a high-rise, standby or emergency power is not required by NFPA 20, unless you have electrical power reliability issues.
