Submersible Pump and submergible Pump
Submersible Pump and submergible Pump
(OP)
Hi all
am I correct to say that a submergible pump will have the pump submerged and the motor (if motor is used) above/outside the liquid, compared to a submersible pump that immerses the pump and motor as one?
We have a large tender specification that requires us to specify VFD's to a series of applications. One of the comments is that this is a submergible pump and we are going to offer a VFD without sinewave filter. A submersible pump in our opinion would always require a sinewave filter on the output due to the fact that the motor insulation of a submersible pump would typically be very poor as it would rely on the cooling effect of the water it is pumping.
I just want to ensure that the explanation of the two types of pumps is quite different when looking at the motor.
Thanks

I have checked through various sites and wiki and can certainly see that there is a difference myself but I'm "(Electrical)", so just checking.
Submergible seems to have the actual pump itself submerged and the motor above ground with a mechanical connection between the motor shaft and the pump shaft.
If the motor is above ground then it is far more lifely to be a 'standard' motor that is ok running from a VFD, without the necessity of a sinewave filter.
We supply our VFD's that control submersible pumps and they are certainly special and require special considerations when it comes to output filters etc.

As for the semantics, I'd not depend on a logical discussion in here, I'd ask specifically what style pump motor system they're referring to.
