L/d for compression members

L/d for compression members

L/d for compression members

(OP)
Has anyone had any experience with or heard of a code requirement that allows different l/d ratios based on what size member you are using?

i.e. if i have a 2x4 compression member then l/d<50, but for a 2x6 i can have an l/d of lets say for arguments sake, l/d<75.

RE: L/d for compression members

Not really here, except the increasing allowable stress limitation placed on Fc as the l/d ratio increases.

RE: L/d for compression members

My pdf copy of the TPI1-2007 Commentary states that l/d = 50 for compression members and l/d = 80 for tension members. My NDS also gives a l/d = 50 for compression members.

RE: L/d for compression members

My old AITC Timber Construction Manual had an upper l/d limit of 50 for solid columns, but a different, and more complicated, limit for spaced columns.

RE: L/d for compression members

That has been pretty much "locked" in for as long as I can remember.

RE: L/d for compression members

See TPI2007 section 7.3.6 - You can do calculations to account for the warp effect instead of using the L/D ratio. I think it is called the P Delta effect. Good luck!
