Beam and Plate Shoring in VA

I have a client that needs a design for a 15-20 foot deep excavation in VA, does VA require Structural Engineer design of Shoring or can a PE stamp the shoring design?

RE: Beam and Plate Shoring in VA

By the way, what is beam and plate shoring?  Soldier beams with steel plate lagging?  If so, why are you using steel plates?

Uh, a structural engineer is a PE, eh?

Thanks for information,  regarding beam and plate clarification, they have used this on previous projects not sure of the justification for the steel plates on previous projects, not sure of all of the details for this site yet.

Re:fattdat - some states break out the distinction for certain items such as retaining walls, shoring, etc.  For example in Illinois a retaining wall over 4-feet high requires Structural Engineer Stamp, my geotech engineer here in Illinois indicated that shoring in IL must also be desinged by a structural engineer.

digger95,

Do you know or have you heard the justification in IL for requiring a SE seal on shoring designs?  I ran across this a few years ago and just can't for the life of me understand how that came to be.  Generally speaking, the shoring designs I have seen and been involved with are much more geotechnically critical than structurally critical.

Just curious.

RE: Beam and Plate Shoring in VA

Here in Virginia, the seal is "Professional Engineering," whether you are a civil, structural or geotechnical.  It's by your experience that you stay in your area of practice.  So, while I've passed the same exam as my structural engineering counterparts, I'm not in the marketplace as a structural engineer and would not seal a set of structural drawings by my honour.  I didn't realize that other states (well I know California is different) had unique credentials for structural, geotechnical and civil engineers.

As far as I know, IL, CA & NY are the ones that make a distinction
