Rational Method to Design Vehicular Barriers

Rational Method to Design Vehicular Barriers

(OP)
There have been many questions posted over recent years about how to design bollards, traffic barriers, guardrails, etc. for vehicular impact forces.

The September 2010 issue of Structure Magazine (http://www.structuremag.org/index.aspx)  has an article entitled "A Rational Method to Design Vehicular Barriers" that some of you might find interesting.

I can't link directly to it as I need to update my computer's flash program but click on the link above and you should be able to find it.

RE: Rational Method to Design Vehicular Barriers

I noticed the author is a P.E., S.E., and a lawyer....

Hey JAE...you're one designation behind...how's that law degree coming?

RE: Rational Method to Design Vehicular Barriers

I cannot reproduce the author's results in the bollard example on p.24 of the article.

kb=3EI/L^3=1581 kip/in or 1.90x10^7 lb/ft (not 10^6 lb/in?)

Fully plastic force = FyZ/18" = 66.0 kip (not 56.7 kip ?)

Where/how does one get the 6.8" deflection?
