Triac driven motor problems.

(OP)
Hello,

Here is the  Triac circuit that my company are using to turn a  mains fed motor on and off.
(it's a water pump motor)

Schematic of Triac motor drive circuit:

I am sure they won't mind me posting it because it is a standard Triac drive circuit.

-As you can see, it has a "H/L" switch for making  the motor run with  UK or USA mains.
(please ignore the "V_MOT" designator, ....as far as this is concerned "V_MOT" is just 36V.)

The non-symetrical switching of triacs is  well known, and  I believe that this may be why  some of  our pumps make too much audible noise.

-Also, the Triac gate driver circuitry here is  very lossy.

So,

Do you know of a better way of switching a mains motor on and off?
