Hi guys,

I need to design a substation's (33/11kV 3x15MVA transformers) earth grid.  My problem is that I can't clearly find what compliance I need to achieve to conform to the Australian Standards.  If I refer to substation earthing guide ENA EG1-2006 there is a clear statement which reads "It is recommended until further international standardisation occurs that the American IEEE Std 80 approach be used for substation under ESAA Guidelines." In the other hand if I refer to AS2067 there are no clear guidelines as to what is the basis of earthing design.

Is there an Australian standard that clearly defines the conformity requirements that need to be met and if I follow IEEE80 as the design basis for my earthing design will I conform to local Oz requirements?

I would ask the customer which spec they want you to comply with, to nip the issue in the bud now, rather than risking costly redesign and alterations further down the line.

Thanks for the advice Marmite.  Interestingly we have posed this question to the customer already and their response was that they want compliance to the latest and greatest Australian standards.

From your customer's response I assume that he is not using consultants and is expecting you to perform this fuction free of charge. Proceed with care in this situation, you will be receiving no consultants fee but if you make the wrong choice the liability will certainly be yours. In your position I would approach the supply authority that will eventually provide supply to the transformers in question and seek their advice.

May be OP is the "consultant". I would think researching the codes and standards should be the part of the design services. If not you need to engage services of professional(s) who has done this before.
