"Where Used" Parameter shown in drawing

"Where Used" Parameter shown in drawing

(OP)
I'm running WF 4 & using PDMLink.  I want to report a "Where Used" type of parameter in the drawing, but I don't trust for it to be manually entered.  I know that the reference viewer will show what assembly is using what part/subassembly, but can't find a parameter to use based on this.

Any suggestions?  Thanks for the help!

RE: "Where Used" Parameter shown in drawing

At my current place, we are using NA (next assembly) parameter which indicates in which top level assembly a component is being used.  I guess you should be able to set it up this way, but you would have to manually enter the data into the parameter anyway, especially if its a generic component.

Aleksey

RE: "Where Used" Parameter shown in drawing

That kind of thing never works.  You have no control once a component or sub assembly is released where someone will decide to use it.  It might start out being used in only one upper level assembly but that could easily change over time.  You need a PDM system to tell you where the components are being used.

So, I thought I may clarify things a little.  I work for a company that is in the business of creating 1-off machines with 1-off parts.  Working with folks that have (as I have) used both a "Smart" numbering system and a "Sequential" numbering system.  We're not actually concerned about parts changing down the road, as that usually manages itself, and once the machine is out the door, we will move on to the next one, and not reuse the old design without renumbering it anyhow.

The problem comes when the shops or customer reviewers don't have ready access to the PDM system, and a sequential numbering system is difficult to navigate.  ASME Y14.1-2005 provides for an Application Block, and we're considering using it.

Is there someway that I can automate a parameter, say "NEXT_ASSY_UP_1", "NEXT_ASSY_UP_2"... to report what PDM already knows? (Where Used or Dependencies...)

It seems like it's a long-shot, but for my purposes, it would be a blessing!

Thanks for the help!

John
