Corrugated steel shear panels

Corrugated steel shear panels

Corrugated steel shear panels

(OP)
Hi All,

I am soon going to be working on the design of some steel cabin type structures, some are blast resistant cabins and some are marine cargo containers. Normal construction for both of these seems to usually comprise a rectangular box type frame with corrugated steel panels forming the sides. Sometimes they have intermediate framing but I have not yet seen one with any diagonal bracing, so they must all rely on the corrugated wall and floor panels resisting shear to provide overall stability.

Can anyone advise on methods of assessing the strength and stiffness of corrugated panels in shear for this type of construction?

RE: Corrugated steel shear panels

I had a similar project where I had to analyze a shipping container.  I knew the steel yield and ultimate and modeled the container w/ corrugations in RISA 3-D using plate elements.  It was not too complicated, just created the corrugated profile, mesh the plates and copy them down the line.  RISA can be set to show the von Mises stresses of the plates which I compared to the yield stress divided by the most conservative safety factor of bending or shear (1.67).
