I work in Aerospace and need absolute control of Parts List ID numbering.  The parts list numbering is used in a whole range of documents ie FMECA, mass report, etc.

Part ID is normally of the form 1.3.1.2

I am currently not using NX but we may change.

I currently manually add an Attribute named CALLOUT in the drawing file of the top level assembly and manually enter numbering for all levels.  Only the top level is listed in the GA parts list, the rest I use as a cross-check between the model and the formal parts list (stored in apreadsheet or document).

I know that CALLOUT is a reserved name and I should probably use something else.  It works OK most of the time but recently I substituted a part and all CALLOUTs changed and I had to manually change them back.
Is there a way to fix the CALLOUT or should I give up and use something like SEQ_NO.

What happens if we convert to NX.  I will need the same control.  I know that some attributes can be changed in NX and are then available in UG.

I've worked out how to control what info goes in the  parts list columns and how to make the ID balloons follow what is in the parts list.  Just need advice on the ID/CALLOUT.

Once a Parts List is generated, the Callouts should not change unless you force a new sorting of the Parts List.  However, there is little control intitially, so I would recommend that using your own 'SEQ_NO' scheme would probably be your best approach.

Thanks John, I've had problems before with item numbers and parts lists changing on me so am very weary.

The problem might be that CALLOUT may have been defined in the part model file and/or the assembly model as well as in the assembly drawing file.

I could do with understanding what it means if an attribute is defined at different levels.

For the Item numbers, they are only really applicable at assembly level,  if a part is used in several assemblies it is almost sure to have different Item numbers.  Also, depending on the numbering system the same part will have different Item numbers at different levels of an assembly structure, ie part XYZ may be item 5 in it's first level assembly but may become 3.5 at the level above and then 2.3.5 and so on.

What I want to do is manually set the Item or SEQ_NO within each assembly drawing file in the tree.  I don't mind the work involved as long as I only have to do it once and it doesn't change on me.

Does the fact that a part is given different values of the attribute SEQ_NO at different levels of the assembly cause problems.  Does it need to be done in a specific order or is the information transferred one way only? Cheers

Without actually seeing an assembly model with your attributes defined, I would be hard to assure you of any particular behavior.  However, the level at which a component is found SHOULD not change the value of any user-defined attribute.
