Maximum Rebar Length

Maximum Rebar Length

(OP)
Can anyone advise what the typical maximum length of reinforcing bars (# 8 and larger ) that is manufactured and transported to the construction site (no special transporting permits)?

I am designing a large foundation mat for concrete tanks.

RE: Maximum Rebar Length

I usually see something around 24' on shop drawings.

RE: Maximum Rebar Length

I believe the bars are 60 ft typically(from mill). They must bring them to the shop for fabricating with something, usually a tractor trailer. Most can accomodate 50 ', probably there are extended trailers for the task. Contact the rebar supplier.

RE: Maximum Rebar Length

60' are the norm, but I would call your local rebar supplier for specific information.  They may be able to accomodate longer lengths pending the location shipped to and accessability.

RE: Maximum Rebar Length

The mills will generally not supply anything longer than 60 ft (the standard length) since it cannot be handled using normal means.  Lengths greater than this should be lapped or coupled.  If you require longer lengths of #8 or larger bars, and cannot lap splice or couple, plan on using welds per AWS D1.4 on ASTM A706 rebar.

RE: Maximum Rebar Length

In these environs... 12m and 18m is the maximum length.  About 40' and 60', respectively.

Thanks everyone.  I'll call a couple of suppliers to confirm the 60ft length is available.

RE: Maximum Rebar Length

Too pour it on a little....we buy all of ours 60' long.

RE: Maximum Rebar Length

I think they have spindle rolls of bars up to #6.

You might be able to get a crazy long # 6 or smaller bar!

RE: Maximum Rebar Length

Yes, you could buy a 10 ton roll of #5, but typically not #8 (although you could in stainless.)  I do not recommend it, and field bending must be approved by the EOR.  Straightening a coiled rebar is not easy. smile
