Developed Drafting View

Developed Drafting View

(OP)
An unusual question.....

I need to create a drafting view of a developed (flattened engine casing)

If you imagine a jet engine casing, I want to create a view on a drawing as if I had cut the casing down one side and flattened it out.

It's only for pictorial purposes, so does not need to be mega accurate, but does need to be representative & associative.

The only method I have come with thus far is to take folded views at regular intervals, rotate the views, clip them a bit and align them all.

As you can imagine this is a pain, and takes a long time. I am toying with the idea of trying to create some kind of NX open script to do this.

Has anybody got any better ideas?

I'm using NX6

Cheers,

NXj

RE: Developed Drafting View

I did something almost exactly like this a long time ago (in Unigraphics V8 or 9) , but I do not remember exactly how I did it - it was also done with 3D surfaced wireframe.wireframe, not solids.
I think what I did was project the curves normal to the surface and onto a flat plane - the flat plane was on the center axis of the jet engine housing.
I don't have time to play around today to see if I can repeat what I did, but I hope to get back to you.

RE: Developed Drafting View

Attached is a Part file and a Drawing with about the best that can be done interactively using an 'Unfolded Point to Point Section View'.  It doesn't go a full 360° around the part, but it does cover most of it.
