Our company is in the process of procuring an AMSE code for pressure vessels. We have to decide to procure ASME III or ASME IV as we have a need to use the code on both nuclear and standard Pressure systems. What are the key differences between the codes and is everything within ASME IV covered within ASME III??

Jimbo, Section III are Rules for construction of Nuclear Facility Components and Section IV are Rules for Heating Boilers fired by oil, gas, electricity, or coal; two totally different areas, go to www.asme.org for details about the BPVC.

ferdy, I understand that they are for different applications but they both utilise Pressure Vessels so I assume have very similar concepts eg Flanges, PV heads and PV structure. What I want to know is if there are any major differences that one code covers that the other does not in terms of the design of the Pressure Vessel itself? I only want to purchase one code if i can help it.

Jimbo, The ASME BPVC is for all kind of vessels, all of them have different applications and different fabrication rules, some of them are very similar, but if you design a steam boiler, you have differences with a water boiler, a pressure vessel, or a separator, for this reason the Code has other Sections, is better if you design your vessel with the specific rules from the section that is applicable to your case, rather than improvising and adapting some rules from other, that could drive your project to disaster.

I think you should get the whole Code ASME.
some $15K USD, you will get it back in no time with the knowledge you will get.
An eng designing a sect III vessel may not be able to design a simple Sect IV vessel, or the other way around even ahrder.
take it that way.
